New Orleans Here I Come

Hello all. Just wanted to take a second to say that in just a few hours, I'll be heading to New Orleans with my wife Margaret for the 12th annual Satchmo Summerfest! This will be my fifth time there and it's always a highlight of my year. If you've been with me for a while, then you know what to expect: lots of photos, videos and breathless descriptions of what is going on down there. If you're in New Orleans, you better stop by and say hello! Here's the official link to the free Festival:

And here's a great article by John Swenson in "Offbeat," featuring some quotes by yours truly:

Louis Armstrong's Musical Ideals

Before I run, you might have noticed an announcement in that last piece. Well, it's true: yesterday, Universal put out a digital release titled "A Day with Satchmo." It's every single surviving take--rehearsal, breakdown, master, etc.--from Louis's August 1, 1957 session with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis and Louie Bellson (part of "Ella and Louis Again"...without Ella). If you ever want to hear what it was like when Louis Armstrong was recording in the studio, you're going to love this release:

So enjoy that while I'm gone and stay tuned for some exciting reports from the land of the red bean. Next stop, New Orleans!

Keep up the good work.

But you've worked so hard to get to this high standard of Satchology, I will say that it is not luck, it is skill.
